Government announces changes to apprenticeships

The Government has recently announced that it plans to use funds in the next Budget to create up to three million more apprenticeships - the aim is to boost productivity by getting more young people into the workplace. Apprentices benefit the UK economy by £34billion and several thousand young people started apprenticeships last year, and go some way to reducing the UK’s ongoing skills shortage in key economic areas.

The Department for Skills and Business are making apprenticeships more attractive to businesses by giving them a greater say on what apprentices learn at college, through a voucher scheme which will allow them to select the most appropriate college course for their apprentice.

Bromley Education Business Partnership is working on the Youth Employment Scheme (YES), which aims to place 100 young people into contracted employment over two years. Many of the young people placed so far have started apprenticeships, and these placements have been across a diverse range of job sectors, including administration, customer service and child care. We have a pool of young people that we are currently working with who are keen to start an apprenticeship in a range of different fields.
