Bromley EBP Celebration Event
The Mayor of Bromley praised the efforts of local businesses and individuals who work with the Bromley EBP at our annual celebration event on Tuesday 6th July 2010.
Councillor George Taylor said: “The time they all give to inspire and share their expertise with our young people makes a huge difference to so many and must be applauded.”
All time is given for free but it is estimated that it adds up to around £2.5million in real terms to the development of the children and young people of the Borough. Volunteers work across a range of projects – from mentoring older students on a one to one basis, to working with small groups of younger students and improving reading and number skills. Other businesses offer short or long term work placements with some individuals going in to schools to help with entrepreneurial workshops or assist school leavers in interview and CV writing skills.
The 'Making a Difference' event at the Bromley Education Development Centre focused on showcasing the talent of the young students as well as the rewards for the businesses and individuals engaged in each project. Host for the evening was one of the 100 trained BEBP business ambassadors Keith Dolby who described the rewards of using his extensive knowledge in the IT industry to help the next generation.
Keynote speaker, Gillian Pearson, Director of Children and Young People Services in the Borough of Bromley said: “I am incredibly proud of the BEBP and the voluntary efforts of so many businesses and individuals and we are hugely indebted to them and other partners in the public and private sector.”
The successful collaboration between business and the BEBP was illustrated by the Primary Eco Challenge backed by both the News Shopper and The Glades shopping centre. Winning sculptures made from recycled materials were on display at the event.
Lesley Holland the BEBP Operations Manager said the event was the best yet and added: “The stars, as always, were the young people; from the students who run the reception and catering for the event, to the singers from Cator Park School and industry challenge presentations from Bullers Wood School. The young entrepreneurs from Pickhurst Junior School showcased their classroom based businesses and impressed all our guests with their passion and knowledge.
“Despite the recession, so many people give their time and expertise to make a difference to young people and the numbers of schools and colleges we work with continues to grow.”
