Bromley Students Take the Next Steps to Employment

On Friday 11th November, over 70 students from Ravens Wood and Langley Park School for Boys attended BEBP’s “Next Steps” event at Bromley Library.  The event is held for students from year 13 who are looking for alternatives to university.

The day was supported by professionals representing a number of different sectors including; law, construction, training, and health & social care.

Students and business representatives took part in a hugely successful ‘speed networking’ session. This gave small groups of students the chance to sit down with employers, and ask them specific questions about their business. It also gave employers an opportunity to convey the merits of working for their companies to the students, and what to expect when working for them. Michael Lever from Specac described the speed networking as “brilliant” as it was very student orientated.

A ‘CV Clinic’ was set up for students who wanted some friendly advice on making their CV stand out from the rest, with added input on interview techniques.

Job Centre Plus gave an insightful talk into what employers expect of CVs. An important point raised was to make sure your email address is professional – ihateyou@hotmail.co.uk is not appropriate!

Mr Butterworth from Langley Park School said there was “lots of very valuable and varied information” for the students.

The response from the students was also very positive:

“Today was excellent it’s really allowed me to decide whether an apprenticeship is for me”

“Helped me think clearer in terms of my future pathways”

“Good variety of experience among speakers”

We are looking forward to our next event for students from Darrick Wood School will be on 29th November.
